Sapelo Island
Georgia's 4th largest barrier island, Sapelo's 16,000 acres are managed by the Department of Natural Resources, which oversees the habitat of pine and hardwood forest, salt marsh, and more than two miles of wide, sandy beach. The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Reserve enables visitors to experience a typical barrier island natural community. Exhibits and displays bring to life both the natural and cultural history of Sapelo Island, while public tours enable the visitor to experience the African-American community of Hog Hammock, the University of Georgia Marine Institute, and the RJ. Reynolds mansion. The ferry dock in Darien is about a 45-minute drive from Richmond Hill south on 1-95 to Exit 49 (Hwy 17) and then east to Darien.
