Golden Isles of St. Simons & Jekyll
Four islands make up the cluster known as the Golden Isles of Georgia, accessible from the port city of Brunswick. A causeway links both St. Simons, Sea Island, and Jekyll to the mainland, but Little St. Simons is only reached by boat. St. Simons Island is the largest and exemplifies the flair of island living with beaches, beautiful golf courses, motels, and island eateries. Sea Island, actually part of St.Simons, is residential and home to the very upscale resort, The Cloister. Jekyll Island will appeal to the more historic minded visitor. Lodging and restaurants are available, although development is more limited. In fact, the state of Georgia owns the island. Bicycling is popular as is golf, of course, but the main draws are the historic district and the Summer Waves Waterpark.
The Jekyll Island Historic District Museum and Visitors Center tell how America's richest and most powerful men originally bought the island in 1886 and developed it into an exclusive resort. Club members included the Rockefellers, Goulds, and Morgans who built private "cottages," many of which are open to the public. Tours are available.
Head south on 1-95. Its about an hour's drive. Contact the Brunswick & The Golden Isles Visitors Bureauat (912) 265-0620 for more information.
